Core teaching materials Youth+Sport

Didactic concepts as a bridge between theoretical knowledge and the reality of teaching can be a real support for teachers in everyday teaching. The core teaching material Jugend+Sport is a good example of this. The content is adapted to the target audience, i.e. the instructors. Sports science findings, particularly from the field of exercise science, are presented in a way that is relevant to learning and easy to understand. The cross-sport approach allows for a wide range of applications and discussion between the different sports. The didactic concept is coherent for the intended target group. It goes without saying that other concepts also exist and are just as valid.

The Swiss Federal Institute of Sport Magglingen (SFISM) offers various training programmes in the field of sport: Youth+Sport, Adult Sport, Coach Training and Sport in the Armed Forces. The need to standardise the theoretical foundations of teaching and to create common core content for the sports training courses gave rise to the "Core concepts for teaching and training". As a common reference work, they guarantee harmonised guidelines, but allow for specific leeway. The aim is to help harmonise terminology and models and thus ensure a better understanding in the area of further education, even beyond the boundaries of the sport.

In addition to the sport and training-specific teaching media, the core teaching material represents the central theoretical teaching documentation of Youth+Sport. Using this reference content, participants in Y+S training modules are enabled to make the step from learner to teacher, from athlete to leader and later from leader to expert (see also military sports leader training).

The core teaching material Jugend+Sport uses concepts and models to show the principles according to which teaching works, what it involves and how it is organised. The theory is at the service of practice: Teachers should be able to reflect on, analyse and improve their own actions with the help of the core teaching material in order to be successful in practical implementation. The core teaching material is structured by three core concepts:

  • the pedagogical concept

  • the sports motor concept

  • the methodological concept

The "why" answers the question of the overarching objective of the lesson (pedagogical dimension), the "what" determines the corresponding content (sport-motor dimension) and the "how" determines the appropriate form of teaching (methodological dimension).

The word "core" as a central element emphasises the organic structure of the training content. Similar to the globe, which has a shell-like structure from the centre outwards, the "core concepts for teaching and training" represent the actual core and the Y+S core teaching material its first shell. Depending on the type of sport, training and teaching level, further, differently shaped shells then follow towards the outside. Each new shell in turn encompasses all the previous ones. This anchoring in the core and the subsequent development of content from the inside outwards distinguishes this model from other didactic models, which are usually additive in structure.
