Mobility

Mobility is the ability to utilise the full range of motion of the joints involved in movements at will. The term must be distinguished from flexibility, which only describes the range of movement that is limited by the anatomy of the joints. Mobility is the basis for qualitatively and quantitatively optimised execution of movement.

Mobility is limited by various factors:

  • The structure of the joints

  • Length of the tendons and ligaments

  • Extensibility and willingness of the muscles to stretch

  • Basic tension of the muscles (tone)

These limiting factors vary greatly from person to person and are also partly genetically determined. Muscle tone and the willingness of muscles to stretch depend on influences from the central nervous system and can also be influenced by emotions. Stretching increases the stretch tolerance, but the length of the muscles and tendons is generally not changed.
